An energetic force balancing serious edge and cheerful charisma, the team promises to deliver an impactful punch to any scene.
Code:Miao is a unisex dance unit combining elements of the urban dance studio and Japanese idol industries. The team produces videos with a focus on dance covers, original choreography, and freestyle synthesizing in-house contributions of members and staff. With an overarching magical kitten hybrids concept, the team's goal is to challenge members' artistic development in choreographic vision, cinematic film, and unique visual design inspired by music, atmosphere, and story.
Our Journey
From an overambitious collaboration idea in Spring 2019 to a full-fledged 9 member dance idol group officially debuted June 2023.
Humble Beginnings
The team was founded in 2019 by CM, Lightning, and Dandy after participating in an "OdoTeam Battle" online dance completion -- that is, an online dance cover contest challenging soloists to synthesize a seamless collaborative group video. When the temptation to reach each other beyond the screen overflowed, the three teammates residing in the United States Western Coast hatched a plan to film the dance video contest entry as an in-person cover.
Initially, the idea to lead a collaboration dance cover was tossed around as a single summer project. Dandy invited her longstanding dance friend since middle school, Kai, while Lightning invited her fellow best friend and fellow Nelements teammate Zippy (known as Air in their respective element-themed dance group). CM suggested to open auditions for anyone interested in joining the meetup. One by one, the collaboration group expanded.
The initial lineup (of CM, Lightning, Dandy, Kai, EllieS, Lyra, Zippy, and Sakura) was scheduled to debut on March 18, 2020 live headlining as official guests at Ani-Me Con. Alas, with the pandemic salting the wounds of major life changes, the group emerged with a remixed lineup, restructured leadership, and renewed goals.
May 2022 marked a lifechanging moment for the team. For some, it was a devastating goodbye as it was time to part ways. For others, it was a new, forward-thinking era lighting their hopeful eyes as the team began sprinting towards debut at full speed. A second round of auditions opened to fill the gaps of undebuted members. The team gained some new beloveds: Azzy and Flo.
Code:Miao is excited to debut via a livestreamed concert in June 2023 under the leadership of CM and KAI. A magical cat themed dream team uniting powerful soloists with backgrounds in hiphop, dancehall, pole, house, modern, and idol and credits from Empire Dance Crew, Nelements, Yotsuba, DROPS, and PRiSMix.
